WEEKLY MEDITATION

Breaking breadToday's gospel tells us how Christ opened the minds of the disciples to the understanding of the scriptures. He explained why He had to suffer and rise from the dead on the third day. Moreover, they were to be his witnesses, preaching penance for the remission of sins, to all nations. Our prayer today is an invitation to Jesus to come into our lives so that our minds and hearts may be opened to let in God's word. It is our turn to be witnesses to the Gospel and to show forth the resurrection in our lives. The first disciples could not keep the Good News to themselves but hurried to share their great joy with anyone who had ears to listen. Our relationship with Jesus requires us to communicate the Good News by our attitudes, values, and lifestyle. The Christian message is never fully ours until we have shared it with our family, friends, and the people we meet in life. The Risen Lord can only make an impact on the world if our words and actions combine to reveal His power. We must show forth the resurrection in our lives!

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

MAY CROWNING Our annual crowning of the Blessed Mother will take place this Thursday at 7 p.m. in church. Please come and participate in this beloved, traditional show of devotion to Mary, our Queen and Mother. Holy Hour will not be held that evening.

MOTHER'S DAY APPEAL The annual Archdiocesan Catholic Charities Appeal parish collection will be taken next weekend at all masses. We are asked to support the vital work of Catholic Charities in fulfillment of our Gospel mandate to care for the poor. This agency provides food, clothing, shelter, education, encouragement, and hope for tens of thousands of needy children and adults in our archdiocese. Please help!

CONCERT Cardinal Stepinac Croatian School is organizing a concert featuring the famous Croatian singer from Split, Vinko Coce, accompanied by Mario and David, on Saturday, May 10, at 7:30 p.m. in our Parish Hall. Tickets are $20 per person and can be obtained from all members of the Croatian School board and at the rectory. All are invited to this beautiful spring event.

MASSES Please be advised that we already have a full schedule of masses for the months of May and June; therefore, no more masses will be scheduled during those 2 months. Thank you for your understanding.

MOTHER'S DAY CELEBRATION Cardinal Stepinac Croatian School is preparing a luncheon and program on Mother's Day, May 11, after the 11 a.m. Mass. Following the luncheon, the Croatian School children will honor their mothers with a special program. Cost: $25 for adults; $10 for children under 12. Tickets are available from school board members and at the rectory.

SACRAMENT OF HOLY ORDERS Today we welcome our deacon, the young Franciscan brother Ignatius Aleric. Together with his 3 colleagues: Brother Tomislav Sablje (Sacred Heart Parish, Chicago), Brother Bozo Milic (St. Francis Parish, Windsor, Canada), and Brother Stipe Renic (Croatian Church, New York), he will be ordained a priest at Sacred Heart Parish here in Chicago on Wednesday, May 21, at 6 p.m. Please mark this date on your calendar and be present at this splendid occasion of ordination to the priesthood.

THANK YOU! We Franciscans are grateful to all who so fittingly, by your presence, showed honor and respect for the life of our Fr. Mark Kozina. Thank you to all who came to his wake at Sacred Heart Church on Monday, and especially to those who attended his funeral mass in our church. Many of you expressed your sympathy in written words or in spoken words, and many recounted wonderful memories of Fr. Mark. We hope and believe that his magnanimity is an inspiration to you. Our gratitude is also extended to those who helped prepare the funeral mass and luncheon in our hall. A special thanks to the Chicago Police Department for its help here at our church and with the funeral procession to the cemetery. Thank you, too, for the gifts and remembrances.....a heartfelt thank you for everything! Fr. Mark once again gathered us around the altar of the Eucharist, the sacred banquet table. May the Lord grant him the reward of eternal peace and bless you for your great love!  +Fr. Marko Kozina (click here)!
