The
Croatian Catholic radio program of St. Jerome Parish, in Chicago,
was started on April 30, 1998. Its main purpose is to inform the
Croatians of Chicago about the events taking place in the Croatian
community, and in a special way to extend something spiritual
to those who are drained by stress, family problems, missing their
homeland ,and worrying about those who are far away, but are loved
so dearly.
We live in
times where the media is a dominant influence, and these days
we have less and less time for each other and for our spiritual
food of prayer and reading the Bible. That is why the objectives
of the radio program are to extend Christian values to the listeners,
to bring light into their day, and to let them know that their
priests are with them not only in church at mass, but also in
their homes, cars, workplaces, or wherever they may be.
The program
consists of many parts; a weekly commentary, a theme of the week,
a talk about the life of a particular saint, a report about Croatian
church history, news about the life of the Church in the homeland
and the whole world, as well as various musical pieces and songs.
This Croatian
parish has followed the example of the Croatian parishes in New
York and Detroit by using the media as a way to connect the Croatians
scattered throughout Chicago and its 46 suburbs and surrounding
areas. When it is difficult to reach one another in person, our
radio is here to close that gap. Our hope is that the program
brings quality information and a heightened spiritual awareness
to our listeners.
We hope to
be heard even further than the surrounding areas (by strengthening
our signal), and to attain even more information by working together
with the Croatian Catholic radio station in Zagreb.
Our program
can be heard every Saturday between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 pm on WNDZ, 750
AM. The entire program is produced at the newly-built studio in
the church hall. Its broadcast is for the City of Chicago and
its surrounding areas. With this, we invite the Croatians of Chicago
to join us on the radio waves and to share thoughts and moments
which will shorten our distances and bring our souls closer.
The one-hour
program originally started on WJJJ 1350 AM. Two years
later, it switched to WNDZ 750 AM. In January 2006, the program
expanded from one half hour to 45 minutes (10:00 to 10:45
a.m.), expanding once again several months later on June 4, 2006
to a full-hour show (10:00 to 11:00 a.m.), and in September 2006
becoming a program of all Croatian parishes of Chicago.
