WEEKLY MEDITATION

Jesus knew well the minds and hearts of the Pharisees. He tried to influence their thinking so that they would change their hypocritical ways. They were publicly pious and expected others to obey them, yet were neither holy nor devout, inwardly. It was sufficient for them that people treat them as authorities and respect them. How did they develop this type of attitude and behavior? It was the result of egotism and lack of humility. They were devoid of virtue because every true virtue is humble. Without humility, arrogance reigns! To those people Jesus retorted, "Whoever is exalted shall be humbled. Whoever is humbled shall be exalted."
Even the highest tower must be humbled by the fact that it rose from the ground. The Pharisees and Scribes thought differently. They were convinced that they could be like the exalted steeple, yet without the foundation of humility. Because of this Jesus warned them, "Woe to you!" That warning refers not only to them, but to all who are like them.
