WEEKLY MEDITATION

We know what Elijah is talking about when he says "Lord, I've had enough". Many a time in our bleak moments we feel like saying that. To keep going we need assurance that we are not alone in our lives and that God is with us helping us to carry our crosses and rescuing us from every predicament that befalls us. The Gospel points out that we have such help in Jesus who is the Bread of Life. We can look at our lives and ask ourselves, are we hungering for Christ who is the Bread of Life? Coming to Christ requires far more than a weekly walk up to the altar to receive Holy Communion. If Jesus makes himself available to us, then we have to make ourselves present to him. To approach the altar complaining, or with a heart full of bitterness because of hurts inflicted on us, is not a true sharing in the Eucharist. There is no way we can offer ourselves to God and not try and love our neighbor who has let us down in some way during the week. In our daily lives we are asked to be forgiving, to overcome faults, to understand the failure of friends, and not to close our hearts when we are offended. In the Eucharist we meet the bigness of God who has forgiven us and who asks us to give as freely as we have received. The Eucharist is an opportunity for reconciliation, for wounds and old sores to be bound up, and for forgiveness to be shown. God loves us. We must try to be loving, too!

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

VISITATION OF THE SICK Before every major holy day we try to visit all of the sick of our parish. We would like to do this in anticipation of Velika Gospa. Visits will take place on Monday, August 11, beginning at 9 a.m.

  • VELIKA GOSPA Our major feast is drawing near: the holy day of "Velika Gospa". Here is some important information:

  • We invite everyone to join us every evening for our beautiful Novena to Our Lady. This is a time of prayer, meditation, hymns, conversation with Mary, and encounters with Christ in the Eucharist. Confession is available each evening. The schedule for this week is as follows: Sunday, 6 p. m., Fr. Esequiel Sanchez - "Family- What do we believe?"; Monday, 7 p.m., Fr. Marko Puljic - "Saints: Examples of Faith"; Tuesday, 7 p.m., Fr. Steven Bedenikovic - "10 Commandments/Authority/Obedience"; Wednesday, 7 p. m., Fr. Larry Frankovic - "Sacraments"; Thursday, 7 p.m., Fr. Joe, Fr. Tomislav - "The Bible: God's Word"

  • Please take a day off on the feast of Velika Gospa. Our parishioners have upheld this tradition since 1913. We should really try to reserve this day, which is consecrated to Mary and specially honored by our parish. We understand that your jobs are important, but remember that our ancestors took this day off work even during the Depression. "Velika Gospa" was always regarded as a most important occasion. Our procession, as the central event of our feast, is very well recognized. Please take part in it. Don't just be a spectator. Be a part of this event and share the joy! Carry a flag, or wear a Croatian ethnic costume. Walk with any one of the groups. Invite your friends to come. That day is for us all. It belongs to us and is truly a part of our souls!

  • If you can help in any way, please NOTIFY us. We especially need ladies to help in the kitchen (peeling potatoes, etc.). Kitchen helpers are asked to come on Thursday at 10 a.m.

  • Parking on the feast of Velika Gospa is available at the Old Neighborhood Italian American Club on Shields Ave. between 31st and 30th Streets. Please take advantage of this parking lot and avoid the crowded areas.

  • If you would like to donate flowers for the feast day, please contact your florist. Thank you!

  • We hope that you have received our parish letter together with the Raffle tickets. We thank you in advance for your help and support in buying them or selling them to others.

CARDINAL GEORGE recently spoke very forcefully about anti-Catholicism in the American media. His sermon in its entirety can be obtained in the rear of our church on the information shelves.

FEAST OF ST. ROCCO will be celebrated on Sunday, August 17, with Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Therese Church on 24th St. A procession will held after the mass.

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK
"It is difficult to say anything is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow."
