WEEKLY
MEDITATION
"One,
two, three strikes you're out at the
old ball game." The
Caananite woman who approached Jesus
already had three strikes against her.
Strike one, she was a Caananite whose
people were hostile to the Israelites.
Strike two, she was a woman in a
male-dominated society. Strike three,
she was a gentile. As far as the
disciples were concerned, the
Caananite woman had struck out even
before coming to bat. The Caananite
woman had a real, motherly concern
about her daughter who was tormented
by a demon. The
disciples asked Jesus to "send
her away, for she keeps calling out
after us". The woman was as
persistent as an unwanted gnat. Jesus
nonchalantly answered, "I was
sent only to the lost sheep of the
house of Israel". This gives the
impression that He was not concerned
with others except for the Israelites.
Everyone else was excluded. The
Caananite woman recognized Jesus as
the Lord, the Son of David, who could
help her daughter. She paid homage to
Him, pleading, "Lord, help
me!" Jesus replied, "It is
not right to take the food of the
children and throw it to the
dogs." She humbly responded,
"Please, Lord, for even the dogs
eat the scraps that fall from the
table of their masters."

THIS
WEEK'S SCHEDULE
THANK
YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU!
Our Lady's feast day was beautiful and
successful. We gratefully acknowledge
the assistance, contributions, and
participation of all who generously
gave of their time, talent, and
service in honor of the Blessed
Mother. Your help in planning,
preparing, working, and cleaning up
afterward is dearly appreciated. To
the people who worked so tirelessly in
the church, procession, hall, and
outside, we extend a sincere thank
you. Our gratitude is also expressed
for donations of flowers, food, and
monetary gifts. We are grateful to all
who attended the Novena, and to all
who came to celebrate this special
occasion. Thank you to Bishop Gorman,
Fr. Dusko Moro, all the priests who
concelebrated the high mass, and our
parade marshal Marian Segvich and her
family. We also extend our thanks to
the City of Chicago for help in making
this day special. The combined efforts
and dedication of our parishioners and
friends made possible a wonderful
tribute to Mary, and an event of which
St. Jerome Parish can again be proud.

OUR
90TH ANNIVERSARY RECALLING OUR PAST
From
1982-85, Fr. Jerome Kucan served as
pastor of St. Jerome. He continued
with the necessary remodeling, and was
known for being fair and sociable. He
is also remembered for his sermons on
Church dogma. Fr. Jerome was
instrumental in obtaining a statue of
St. Leopold Mandic for the Church.
