WEEKLY
MEDITATION
Jamieson,
a prosperous and God-fearing farmer,
is praying with his son one night at
bedtime. Jamieson says to his son,
"Let us pray for that poor man
who lives down the road, that the good
Lord may come to his aid." His
son turns to him and replies,
"But, Dad, we don't need to
bother God about that. We can do it
ourselves."Jamieson is trying to
show concern for his neighbor by
praying for the poor man who lives
down the road. But, as his son reminds
him, prayer and good wishes are not
always enough. Sometimes when we pray
God's answer to us is, "But you,
you can do that yourselves." This
is what we see in today's gospel where
the disciples are so concerned about
the hungry crowd that they pray Jesus
to dismiss them so that they could go
and buy themselves something to eat.
Jesus turns and says to them,
"Hey, you give them something to
eat. You can take care of that
yourselves." Only then do they
remember the small guy with five
loaves and two fish. Jesus blesses the
five loaves and two fish and, to their
surprise, that was more than enough to
satisfy the enormous hunger of all the
people. That is how we have the
miracle of the Feeding of the Five
Thousand.

THIS
WEEK'S SCHEDULE
Reflection
on VELIKA GOSPA (3)
- Velika Gospa is a
unique and traditional event in our
parish and in our city. Through this
event, we uphold our tradition, and we
journey back to the source of our
faith. We invite you to join us for
the 9-day novena. Make it into a
family tradition. May the Blessed
Mother's day this year be a spiritual
renewal for us individually and for
our families. Let us pause for a
moment and give thanks to God for
everything we have received. Our lives
go too fast, we are too restless and
often times we find ourselves empty.
May these holy days be an invitation
to pause before the sacredness of our
lives and the gift of people whom God
has granted to us in our lives. Velika
Gospa is not only a festival, picnic,
public event or entertainment. It is
foremost, a Spiritual event! Indeed,
let it be so this year. Please invite
your friends and neighbors to join us.
- VISITING THE SICK Before every
major feast day, we try to visit our
sick. That is what we will be doing
before the feast of Velika Gospa. If
you know of anyone who is sick, anyone
who needs to receive the Sacraments,
or anyone who would like us to visit
them, please call us at the rectory.
We will be visiting the sick on
Saturday, August 10th starting at 9:00
AM.
- Please call your florist for Velika
Gospa flower donations. Thank you in
advance for your generosity.
- VELIKA GOSPA POSTERS are at the back
of the church. Please take some of
them and display them in your windows
and bring them to your local shops or
any public place you can. Thank you!

- BLESSING OF THE "LIVING
ROSARY" This Friday evening,
August 9th after the 7'o clock Novena
we will have a special blessing to
introduce the new rosary for our 90th
anniversary year procession. Once
again, a heartfelt thank you for your
generous donations toward this
project. We would like to extend our
appreciation and gratitude to Mr. Marc
Karagianes, our rosary designer and an
alumni of St. Jerome School. It was
through his dedication, time and
talent that we are able to continue
this wonderful tradition of the rosary
to Our Lady for Velika Gospa. May She
bestow her many blessings upon him.
Please join us for a very special
evening. Refreshments will follow in
the school hall.
DRESS CODE
Please keep in mind that
proper dress attire is required during
our novena, feast day and procession

beside Her and with highest honor of
Her. With honor and pride, we call her
Mother. NO SHORTS, PLEASE!

OUR
90TH ANNIVERSARY. . .
RECALLING OUR PAST
In July of 1979, our parish underwent
another pastoral change. Fr. Anthony
Dukich (1979-1982) was appointed
pastor, and his assistant was Fr.
Ljubo Krasc (1979-1980). Fr. Ljubo
also continued his duties as director
of the Croatian Ethnic Institute. As a
harmonious team, they undertook the
redecorating of the Church and the
Sister's convent. On the occasion of
the Year of Branimir (879-1979), new
oak church doors were installed with
the Cross of Branimir engraved upon
them. (Branimir was a Croatian King
879 A.D.).
