WEEKLY
MEDITATION
We
pray the Scriptures at each Mass.
The beauty of liturgical prayer is
founded on the Word of God, such
that we pray the Scriptures as
Christ our Lord did, even as He died
on the cross. As John hailed the Son
of God made man, so we too, at Mass
after the consecration, worship the
"Lamb of God."
"Behold the Lamb of God! Behold
him who takes away the sins of the
world. Blessed are those who are
called to the supper of the
Lamb."The catechism helps us in
our meditation: The baptism of Jesus
is, on His part, the acceptance and
inauguration of His mission as God's
suffering servant. He allows himself
to be numbered among sinners. He
already is 'the Lamb of God who
takes away the sins of the world.'
(Jn 1:29) Already He is anticipating
the >baptism' of his bloody
death. (Mk 10:38) The Father's voice
responds to the Son's acceptance,
proclaiming His entire delight in
His Son. (Lk 3:22) (CCC 536)When we
pray the responses of the Mass, let
us remember that we are praying the
Word of God. "Sursum
corda", "lift up your
hearts" as you treasure the
prayers and responses of the Mass,
and meet Christ in the liturgy.
Looking forward to meeting you here
again next week as, together, we
"meet Christ in the
liturgy".

VIGIL
PRAYER FOR PEACE After the attacks
on New York and Washington, D. C. on
September 11, the Holy Father
continues to pray and invites
everyone to pray that love will
prevail over hatred, peace over war,
and forgiveness over revenge. The
Holy Father will travel to Assisi,
Italy on January 24, 2002, to pray
for peace throughout the world. In
solidarity with the Holy Father,
Cardinal Francis George will preside
at a prayer vigil for peace at Holy
Name Cathedral on the evening of
January 23, the night before the Pope's multi-religious meeting in
Assisi.
MICHAEL
ANTHONY BILANDIC 1923-2002
- Our parishioner and friend,
Michael Bilandic, former mayor of
Chicago and Chief Justice of the
Illinois Supreme Court, died on
Tuesday evening, January 16, at the
age of 78. We express our
condolences to his wife Heather, son
Michael, brothers Steve and Nick,
sister Eleanor, relatives, and
friends. He was described by his
wife as "a devoted family man
[who] also loved Chicago and its
people, was proud of his Croatian
heritage, and grateful for the
opportunities which this country
provided to his family. He felt
deeply honored to have been able to
serve as a member of the legal
profession and to have participated
in 3 branches of government during a
lifetime of service".
Mike was always very proud of St.
Jerome Church and we are proud of
him. He attended our grammar school
(Class of >36) and corresponded
all of his life with one of his
teachers, Sr. Benedict, who is now
99 years old. He lived quietly, died
quietly, and was buried quietly and
humbly on Thursday in a private
ceremony officiated by our pastor,
Fr. Joe. He was interred at St. Mary
Cemetery beside his parents. May God
grant him eternal rest.
