WEEKLY MEDITATION

"Return home by a different path."
Christmas slowly fades from the scene and disappears. No more Christmas carols are played on the radio stations. Christmas decorations get packed away to be brought out again, maybe already in mid November. Nevertheless, Christmas is still felt in church! The holy season of Christmas lasts until next Sunday when we celebrate the baptism of Jesus.
WisemenToday's Gospel speaks of the Wisemen who came bearing gifts for the Newborn Babe. First they came to Jerusalem, the city of the Pharisees and Sadducees, to inquire about this child. These learned men had knowledge of the Child, but knew not the true meaning of his birth.
The child Jesus was not born in a big city, but in a small, out of the way town. His birth was a mystery that can only be understood in the privacy of our hearts. Before Him knelt the Wisemen who gave him the most precious gifts they possessed. In return the Child gave them something new. They no longer followed the same way of life. They were transformed by their encounter with the Christ Child and began to live lives of new meaning and purpose. They recognized the change that God brought about in their own lives. We, too, will try to follow these Wisemen so that the star will also lead us to the Newborn King. Wise men still seek Him!

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

THE NEW YEAR We began the first day of the new year with holy mass. A large number of parishioners participated in the masses for New Year's Day. At the dawn of this new year we invoked God's blessing on our parish, our faithful, our friends, and our families. May our intercessor, Mary the Mother of God, whose feast we celebrated on January 1st, guide us through the failures and successes of this earthly life. Let this be a happy and blessed entrance into the year of Our Lord, 2003!

CHURCH ENVELOPES Please be sure to take your envelopes for 2003 from the back of the church today after mass.

BLESSING OF HOMES Our priests will be available to bless homes after Christmas. If you would like one of the priests to come to your home, please call the rectory to schedule a date and time for this beautiful Catholic tradition.

BRIDGEPORT CHORAL SOCIETY will present a holiday season concert in our church this Sunday, January 5, 2003 at 4 P.M. They will be accompanied by violins, trumpet, timpani, and organ. Donation is $10 at the door. Twelve years old and under are free.

PLEASE HELP Anyone who wishes to donate blood to help save the life of Mary Ann Cubelic, one of our parishioners, can come to our parish hall today, Sunday, January 5, from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. You must be at least 18 years old and in good health. The procedure is simple, and your help can mean life for Mary Ann!

REMINDER  Are you a registered parishioner of our parish? Have you changed your address or telephone number? Please let us know! To be a member of St. Jerome Parish is an honor and a source of pride. We are committed to continue our journey of faith together. Being a member of our parish community means actively participating in parish life. We welcome your membership, advice, suggestions, ideas, and participation in parish activities. Please, in this newly begun year, let us be even more active for our good and the good of generations that will come after us.

PRESENTATION On Sunday, January 19, in the small hall, a presentation of the very interesting book "Croatian Holocaust" will be given by the author, Professor Ivan Prcela. More information will be given in the next bulletin.

CHURCH CONTRIBUTION VOUCHERS This week you can pick up proof of your contributions to church in the parish office at the rectory. We extend sincere gratitude and appreciation for all the donations to our parish, particularly towards the church restoration, and for all that you do for our parish!

MonstranceADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT takes place every Thursday from 7 to 9 P.M. in our church. We invite all to come to this evening of prayer and visitation with Our Lord.

Thought of the Week
"Count your age by friends - not years. Count your life by smiles - not tears."
