WEEKLY MEDITATION

Today's Gospel proclaims clearly and eloquently that Christmas, the holy day of Christ's birth, is near. This excerpt is read on many Marian feasts, and a portion of it we recognize from our Catholic prayer: "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee."
Mary is the dawn of Advent, the dawn of this time of waiting, the Morning Star that announces the arrival of the one who for centuries was awaited by generations anticipating this distant event, which by Mary's personal witness would soon be realized. With her began the final stage of God's plan. Through her comes the fulfillment of the promise.

FROM US TO YOU
A MERRY AND BLESSED CHRISTMAS

Christmas is a holy day of heavenly light, the light that illuminates the human soul, not the Christmas lights that are displayed in the city streets. The newborn King enlightens the souls and minds of those who seek Him in the silence of the confessional, in the unity of family prayers, and in the splendor of worship. The child of Bethlehem comes to encounter all who willingly draw near to Him to praise the shining light of the Father who, with the birth of Jesus, brings about the new salvation. Therefore, all the earth with the angels sings "glory to God in the highest."

It isn't easy today to recognize the real light. It isn't easy to be an advocate of the true meaning of Christmas. It doesn't always seem advantageous to respect and honor the lasting values that we have received and inherited. Our elders knew how to value and safeguard the treasured beliefs of our faith, the truths that are worth defending. There is an inherent need in us to value our faith and live in accordance with God's laws. The newborn Jesus beseeches us again this Christmas not to substitute the glittering attractions of this earthly world for the primeval light that Christ offers us. Don't underestimate the light of Christ and its eternal value.
During this Christmas season when we receive Jesus in the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist, and sense the warmth of His presence in our family gatherings, we joyfully give thanks and proclaim with the elderly Simeon that the child in the manger is the true light for ourselves and our families because He is the "light of an enlightened people". Welcome Jesus into your soul and into your homes so that He can enlighten your heart!

Thought of the Week
"Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get - only with what you are expecting to give - which is everything."
