WEEKLY MEDITATION

Vine and brachesThe word of Jesus cleanses the disciples as they grow closer in union with him, the True Vine. Jesus has been with them for three years. He has revealed himself as the Son of God and given them the teachings that lead to eternal life. In a short time Jesus will show them the depth of the Divine Love on the cross. Quickly approaching is the time when Jesus will return to the Father; however, Jesus will not leave them orphans.
The Paraclete will be sent to indwell in their hearts and in the community as a whole. The emphasis is now going to shift from Jesus in their midst to the disciples living in the world through the Spirit. Again we see that this new phase in the Christian story calls for action: "I am the vine and you are the branches. He who lives in me and I in him will produce abundantly. Apart from me you can do nothing."
These words from Jesus are crucial, for apart from Jesus all of our works are empty and without lasting meaning. The fruit that we bear apart from Jesus, the True Vine, is self-serving and easily corrupted. However, when our words and deeds become one in praise of the Father, we produce the works of the Spirit. Through the Spirit we bear that fruit which lasts until eternal life.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

SACRAMENT OF HOLY ORDERS  On Wednesday, May 21, Bishop Josip Mrzljak from the Archdiocese of Zagreb will confer the sacrament of Holy Orders at Sacred Heart Church, here in Chicago. Four young Croatian Franciscan deacons will be ordained: Bozo Milic, Ignacije Aleric, Tomislav Sablje, and Stipe Renic. The mass will begin at 6 p.m. Please mark this date on your calendar and be present at this splendid occasion of ordination to the priesthood.

SPECIAL MASS With the retirement of our beloved friend, Bishop John Gorman, a new bishop has been appointed for our Vicariate. He is Bishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller. On this Tuesday, May 20, at 10 a.m., he will celebrate a special mass in our church for all of the 8th grade graduates from Council V 9A. We are pleased to have him here for the first time as our guest.

CONGRATULATIONS  - Bianca Kodzoman has received a degree in political science from New York University; furthermore, she is also the recipient of the Founders Day Award which signifies the accomplishments of those degree candidates who have distinguished themselves among their fellow students through consistent evidence of outstanding scholarship. Congratulations, Bianca, and may the Lord bless your life's journey.

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY "Relay for Life" Craft Fair Come join us for this special event on Saturday, May 31, at Nativity of Our Lord Parish from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. If anyone is interested in a craft table or would like to volunteer, please call Gina at 312 225 - 9063. Donations are welcome.

THE BRIDGEPORT CHORAL SOCIETY will present its Spring Concert today May 18th at 4 p.m. in our church. They will perform the choral music of Beethoven, Byrd, Monteverdi, and Mozart, musically exploring the passion and resurrection of our Lord.

SCHOOL BOARD There will be 4 school board positions open for the next school year. The positions are for a 3 year term, renewable for another 3 year term. The school board develops policies necessary to govern the operation of the school, advises the pastor on principal selection and participates in the principal performance review, advises in matters of tuition and budget, monitors the collection of tuition, and acts as a liaison for communication with other parishioners regarding school matters. The board is also involved in public relations and long-range planning for the school. Board members are expected to take an active role in major fund-raisers for the school. If you think that you would like to be a school board member, please submit a letter to our pastor, Fr. Joe Grbes, listing your reasons for wanting to serve on the school board. Letters should be submitted by June 6, 2003.

WORKSHOP ON RACISM & ETHNIC SENSITIVITY The Archdiocese of Chicago is sponsoring a workshop for parish representatives to come together to reflect on the issues of racism and ethnic sensitivity. Our parish is scheduled to send at least 10 representatives for the weekend of June 6-7. There is no cost for this seminar. If you are willing to attend, please contact Fr. Joe as soon as possible. We appreciate your interest in these crucial concerns. Please respond.
