ANNIVERSARY
MEDITATION
Dear
Parishioners,
Today we celebrate the 90th
anniversary of our parish's journey of
faith - a journey that has been marked
by many lives, that has summoned many
people, and that has rendered this
sacred ground forever holy. So many
encounters! So many sacraments! So
many celebrations! For almost an
entire century we have journeyed
together in hope. It is here,
precisely here, that we find a
dwelling place for our souls.
The early days of our parish were
modest, like the gospel story about
the mustard seed. Following Christ, we
have come a long way. In the course of
many decades our Church has become a
well-known meeting place.
St. Jerome Parish occupies a proud
place on the map of our city and in
the annals of our archdiocese. We are
here today to give thanks to Our Lord
for these precious 90 years. He is the
source of our strength. To him belongs
the gratitude we feel.
In the past 90 years, 48 priests have
served our parish, 6300 children were
baptized, 2100 couples were married,
and 3600 people were buried. All of
the Archbishops of Chicago celebrated
masses here, as did many of the
Croatian Bishops. Our church has
occupied its current location for 80
of our parish's 90 years. It has been
renovated several times, and the most
recent restoration is nearly complete.
St. Jerome School has been in
existence for 80 years. It has given
to our city and the world much
knowledge, sacred values, and lasting
principles. For nearly 30 years
Cardinal Stepinac Croatian School has
been educating our children in
Croatian heritage and culture.
Here at St. Jerome's we gather with
friends, and here we always seek to
renew memories that touch our souls.
Here many societies, clubs, and
organizations have found their true
homes.
Yes, throughout this long 90-year
journey, with pride and humility we
say, Lord, thank You for your grace,
thank You for your proven love, thank
You for protecting us, uniting us, and
encouraging us. May our journey here
continue and go forward with You and
because of You!
.
