WEEKLY
MEDITATION
There
is no mistaking the theme of this
liturgy. It is all about forgiveness
and mercy - basic attitudes that every
Christian must put into practice.
Apart from the command to love one
another, there is no obligation which
Christ taught more forcefully than
that of showing forgiveness. In the
actual circumstances of every day
life, forgiveness is more often talked
about than put into practice, because
it is difficult, demanding, and it
takes a great deal out of us.
Within families, small incidents get
blown out of proportion, become major
issues, and develop into rifts. Among
neighbors, children playing, animals
straying, and property disputes can
cause an unholy war. In any community
differences brought about by
thoughtless words, selfish actions,
and jealousy inevitably provoke
clashes. As a nation we prefer to
nurse old sores rather that reach out
the hand of reconciliation.
In the actual circumstances of daily
living, we are seldom put to the test
of forgiveness in critical matters
that are heart-breaking or emotionally
crippling, like the betrayal of a
friend, yet we are obligated as
Christians to forgive all offenses.
SCHEDULE
OF EVENTS
90th
ANNIVERSARY OF OUR PARISH
Time is running out to make plans for
our October 6th celebration events:
Solemn High Mass at 2 P.M. in our
church, followed by a gala banquet at
the Sheraton Chicago Hotel &
Towers as 301 E. North Water St.
beginning at 5 P.M. Tickets are $100
per person. Make your reservations now
and commemorate this historic occasion
with your fellow parishioners,
friends, and guests.
90TH
ANNIVERSARY PILGRIMAGE
Saturday, October 19th, is the date
for our parish pilgrimage to Holy
Hill, Wisconsin.
90th
ANNIVERSARY RETREAT A
parish retreat is being planned for
November 8th and 9th. We expect to
have a special guest priest conduct
this seminar. The retreat will be for
parishioners only. More information
will be forthcoming.
CEMETERY VISITATION - As part of our
90th Anniversary commemoration, we
will visit the graves of our deceased
parishioners in the Chicago land area.
Our deceased are a part of our parish
community. In remembering them, we
recall the many precious moments of
the past 90 years of our parish's
history. The schedule for cemetery
visits is as follows:
-
Resurrection, September 28 at 10 A.M.
in front of the main mausoleum
-
Mt. Carmel, September 28 at 10 A.M. in
front of the Chicago Bishops'
mausoleum
-
Queen of Heaven, September 28 at 11A.M.
in front of the main entrance
-
St. Mary, November 2 at 10 A.M. in front
of the cemetery office
The priest will arrive at the
appointed time. We ask that you come
with your families on that day to join
us in prayer. If anyone has a deceased
family member at a different cemetery,
please let us know. We would be happy
to visit those graves.
ANNUAL
MEMORIAL MASS On Saturday,
September 21, the Old Neighborhood
Italian American Club and Women's
Alliance will be hosting their Annual
Memorial Mass in honor of their
deceased members at Santa Lucia Church
at 5:00 P.M. All are welcome.
Refreshments will be served after the
mass.
ST.
BARBARA HIGH SCHOOL is
calling all members of the Class of
>82 to a 20 year Class Reunion on
October 25, 2002. If interested,
please call (773) 612 - 5472.
OUR
DECEASED A list of the
deceased who were buried from St.
Jerome's during the last 90 years is
displayed in our church. Those beloved
souls are truly an important part of
our parish. Belief in the resurrection
acknowledges eternal life. If you
notice errors on the list, we
apologize, and ask you to inform us so
that we can correct them. We sincerely
apologize to the families of Joseph
Amato, Frank Fratto, and John Jurasic
for inadvertently omitting their names
of these deceased parishioners.
H.S.A.
ANNOUNCEMENT We invite
everyone to join us today, after the
9:30 A.M. Family Mass, for coffee and
refreshments in the school hall. We
will also be selling copies of "A
Taste of St. Jerome" cookbook for
those of you who missed the
opportunity to purchase your copy
earlier this year.
PARISH
LIBRARY Over the last few
months the restoration and expansion
of the parish library has been
undertaken and its collection of books
is gradually building. If anyone has
books or videos that you would like to
donate, you can now bring them to the
rectory. Please be advised that we can
accept only worthwhile books that are
appropriate to a parish library and of
general interest to our parishioners.
OUR
LADY OF THE MILENNIUM The
33' statue of Mary will again be our
guest (Sept. 29 thru Oct.13) as we
celebrate our 90th anniversary.
ARMORSQUARE
PARK COMMUNITY CONCERT will
be held today at 6 P.M. Come and enjoy
a spectacular evening in the park with
friends and family as you listen to a
delightful concert featuring musical
performances by local community
members.
ORIGINAL
DONORS An original list,
circa 1922, of those who donated
towards the purchase of our present
church building is on display in our
church. This artifact is one more
example of how our past speaks to us
of the generosity of our parishioners.
90TH
ANNIVERSARY... RECALLING OUR PAST
When
Fr. Matt was transferred to St.
Anthony's in Sharon, PA, Fr. Zvonimir
Kutlesa became our new pastor until
1997. Upon his arrival he brought his
vast experience of remodeling church
facilities. Most of these plans have
now been realized.
