WEEKLY MEDITATION

On September 11, our country was forever changed by a horrifying act of terror. The devastating loss of life and unshakable sense of fear affected almost every American. The nation spent the past year recovering, reflecting, and rebuilding -- and we've only just begun. We invite you to light a candle in tribute to those who died, those who survived, and those who are healing.
Jesus, beloved Savior, in remembering these terrible events, we recognize our great need for Your protection. We have painfully learned that our country is vulnerable, and that violence can disrupt the lives of individuals and nations.
We pray for healing for all the people whose lives were shattered by the attacks. We pray for those who defended our freedom. We pray for wisdom for our national leaders. We pray for peace for our country and our world. Jesus, beloved Savior, as we remember, hold us in Your loving hands.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

CCD REGISTRATION will be held this Sunday, September 8th, from 9 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. in the School Hall. CCD classes will begin on Sunday, September 22nd.

ST. JEROME'S IS REMEMBERING SEPTEMBER 11TH
The entire school will be attending mass on Wednesday,  September 11th at 8:05 A.M. During this time of prayer and reflection, we will pray and remember the fallen police, firemen, people of New York City , and the families that were affected by this great tragedy. In addition, many of the teachers will do a variety of activities appropriate to their grade levels. St. Jerome School invites you to come mass on September 11th and pray with us as our nation remembers.

90th ANNIVERSARY OF OUR PARISH

  • Time is running out to make plans for our October 6th celebration events: Solemn High Mass at 2 P.M. in our church, followed by a gala banquet at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers as 301 E. North Water St. beginning at 5 P.M. Tickets are $100 per person. Make your reservations now and commemorate this historic occasion with your fellow parishioners, friends, and guests. Details regarding the Anniversary Mass and banquet program will soon follow.
  •
  • 90TH ANNIVERSARY TRANSPORTATION We will be happy to provide bus transportation to and from the Parish Banquet at the Sheraton on October 6th . If anyone is interested, please contact the rectory.
  • 90TH ANNIVERSARY PILGRIMAGE Saturday, October 19th, is the date for our parish pilgrimage to Holy Hill, Wisconsin.
  • 90th ANNIVERSARY RETREAT A parish retreat is being planned for November 8th and 9th. We expect to have a special guest priest conduct this seminar. The retreat will be for parishioners only. More information will be forthcoming.

RENOWNED SPEAKER TIM STAPLES The priests and Prayer Group of St. Jerome Church invite you to hear the dynamic Tim Staples on Friday, September 13, at 7 P.M. in the School Hall. (No church service will be held). Tim can speak extensively on every Catholic issue and is especially effective in apologetics, bible study, Mary, and the Eucharist. Refreshments (pizza, pop, coffee, cake) will be served immediately following the talk. Everyone is welcome!

OUR DECEASED PARISHIONER Jeroma (Helen) Cecich (89) died in Arizona. The wake will be at Bridgeport Funeral Home today from 3-9 P.M. Her funeral will be on Monday, September 9, at 11 A.M. in our church.. Our sympathy to her sons: James, John, Robert, their families, and friends. May she rest in peace.

CEMETERY VISITATION As part of our 90th Anniversary commemoration, we will visit the graves of our deceased parishioners in the Chicago land area. Our deceased are a part of our parish community. In remembering them, we recall the many precious moments of the past 90 years of our parish's history. The schedule for cemetery visits is as follows:

  • Holy Sepulchre, September 14 at 10 A.M. by the grave site of the Croatian Franciscans
  • Resurrection, September 28 at 10 A.M. in front of the main mausoleum
  • Mt. Carmel September 28 at 10 A.M. in front of the Chicago Bishops' mausoleum
  • Queen of Heaven September 28 at 11A.M. in front of the main entrance
  • St. Mary October 2 at 10 A.M. in front of the cemetery office

The priest will arrive at the appointed time. We ask that you come with your families on that day to join us in prayer. If anyone has a deceased family member at a different cemetery, please let us know. We would be happy to visit those graves.

FINANCIAL REPORT The financial report for the feast of Velika Gospa is in today's bulletin. Once again we thank all who so unselfishly gave of their time, help, and effort on behalf of our parish.

OUR DECEASED A list of all the deceased who were buried from our church during the last 90 years will be displayed in our church. Those beloved souls are truly an important part of our parish. Belief in the resurrection acknowledges eternal life. If you notice any errors on the list, we apologize, and ask you to inform us so that we can correct them.

PARISH LIBRARY Over the last few months the restoration and expansion of the parish library has been undertaken and its collection of books is gradually building. If anyone has books or videos that you would like to donate, you can now bring them to the rectory. Please be advised that we can accept only worthwhile books that are appropriate to a parish library and of general interest to our parishioners.

ORIGINAL DONORS An original list, circa 1922, of those who donated towards the purchase of our present church building is on display in our church. This artifact is one more example of how our past speaks to us of the generosity of our parishioners.

90TH ANNIVERSARY . . . RECALLING OUR PAST
In 1992, the associate pastor, Fr. Ban, moved back to his beloved Croatia. The associate pastors who succeeded him were Fr. Veselko Kvesic (1992), Fr. Miro Grubisic (1993-1994), and Fr. Marko Kozina (1994-1996).
