WEEKLY MEDITATION

Last Sunday we read of Simon Peter recognizing and confessing Jesus to be the Messiah, the Son of the Living God. That demonstration of faith earned him the name Peter, "Rock." The incident was a highpoint in the development of the mission of Jesus. "From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem, undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and on the third day be raised" (Matthew 16:21).
Popular Jewish belief in the time of Jesus expected a Messiah who would bring instant glory to Israel in terms of military success, wealth, and prosperity. The disciples shared this popular belief, so when Peter heard Jesus announce that he must first endure the cross, he figured that Jesus must have made a mistake. "So he took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him, saying, 'God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you!" (v 22). Peter was asking Jesus to abandon the narrow and hard way of the Messiah ("no cross, no crown") for the broad and easy way of the world ("no cross, all crown").  Although Jesus had called him "Rock" a few moments back, Jesus now looks Peter in the face and says to him, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things" (v 23).

RENOWNED SPEAKER TIM STAPLES The priests and Prayer Group of St. Jerome Church invite you to hear the dynamic Tim Staples on Friday, September 13, at 7 P.M. in the School Hall. (No church service will be held). Tim was originally scheduled to speak to us at the Medugorje Anniversary Mass last June, but was unable to reach Chicago on time. Mr. Staples is a nationally recognized apologist, author, and radio personality, will dramatically recount with humor and passion his journey from Protestantism to Catholicism. After attending Jimmy Swaggert College, Tim gave up his pastorate in the Assemblies of God Church when he converted to the Catholic faith in 1988. Tim recalls how he once used his biblical knowledge to attack the Catholic Church, causing many Catholics to question their beliefs, until the day he ran into a Catholic who really knew and was willing to share his faith. That encounter sparked a two year search for the truth. Since his conversion he has given hundreds of talks and helped thousands of Catholics find their way back home. Tim can speak extensively on every Catholic issue and is especially effective in apologetics, bible study, Mary and the Eucharist. Refreshments (pizza, pop, coffee, cake) will be served immediately following the talk.

MARRIAGE ANNIVERSARIES During our 90th Anniversary year we are acknowledging all of the couples in our parish who are celebrating special anniversaries (5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, etc.).  On Sunday, August 25, special Masses were celebrated during which all special anniversary couples renewed their marriage vows. This is a photo of the couples after the 11 a.m. Mass, together with Fr. Tomislav, the celebrant.

Anniversary - Vows Renewal

OUR 90TH ANNIVERSARY RECALLING OUR PAST
In 1985, Fr. Matthew Ruyechan was appointed pastor. He was very close to his parishoners, especially the youth, because of his big heart and loving ways. Together with the associate pastor, Fr. Hrvoslav Ban, and the sisters, he prepared for the 75th anniversary of the parish in 1987. A keepsake book was published with photographs and information about the parish and its members since its founding.
