MARRIAGE BANNS:

Tina Dugandžić i Jason Utterback (1)

"But what did I do? I've done nothing!"

Imagine this scene. A man dies and arrives before the Judgment Seat of God. The Divine Judge goes through the Book of Life and does not find the man's name, so He announces to the man that his place is in hell. The man protests, "But what did I do? I've done nothing!" "Precisely," replies God, "that is why you are going to hell."  That man could just as well be the rich man in today's parable. The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus has left bible readers wondering why the rich man had to go to hell. We are not told that he acquired his wealth by foul means. We are not told that he was responsible for the poverty and misery of Lazarus. In fact, we are not even told that Lazarus begged from him and  he refused to help. We are not told that he committed any crime or evil deed. All we are told is that he was eating and dressing as well as any other successful human being has a right to do. Why then did he go to hell? The problem we have pinpointing the reason why the rich man went to hell has a lot to do with what we think sin is. We often think that we sin only by thought, word, and deed. We forget a fourth and very important way through which we sin, namely, by omission. In the "I Confess" we say these words: "I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done,  and in what I have failed to do." Yet how readily we forget the sin of omission. Today's parable reminds us that the sin of omission can land someone in hell. This is what happened to the rich man..

We Remember.....

In memory of the victims of the evil attack on our country,  please join our Prayer Group  every Monday in our church at 7:00 P.M. (rosary, prayers) as well as every Thursday at 7:00 P.M. (rosary, mass,  Eucharistic adoration). We also still invite you again to do the following during this week:...

-Every evening at 7:00 P.M. please stop your work, switch off your TV, and gather the family together.

- Recite the Apostles Creed, one Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be.  Then, together as a family, say  the mourning prayer from the prayer card you received in church.

Help for the Terrorist Victims

Our parish's aid to the victims of the attack on our country will be coordinated with the Chicago Archdiocesan efforts together with Catholic Charities.  All of the dioceses throughout the U.S.A. are working together in a joint effort to help those in need.  We will inform our parishioners as to how they will best be able to contribute to this worthy cause.

October Mass Attendance Count

All parishes are asked to participate in the annual count of people attending mass during the weekends in October.  This is an important source of information for planning,  evangelization, and decision making.  Please attend and be counted!

Be Informed and Affirmed

It is important that we Catholics be informed and affirmed in our faith.  In a world often at odds with Church teachings, The Catholic New World is the Archdiocesan newspaper that provides the Catholic perspective on news and events locally and around the world.  Learn about stories and events from a perspective that is not available in any other media.  Your subscription will help this exemplary newspaper continue to share and spread our faith.  Your support is vital!

90th ANNIVERSARY OF OUR PARISH

This milestone occasion will be celebrated on October 6, 2002.  Mark you calendars now and reserve this important date.

Reflection on life...

"In the past, when the trains passed by in the night, you could hear the clickety-clack sound of the train passing over the tracks. But now, as the tracks get smoother, you don't hear it anymore. Life is like that. Our paths smooth out as we get older and death is okay. We are not created to travel, we are meant to arrive."

"I experience myself as sandals which God puts on and which He will tread upon so that through them (the sandals) He may come to those people whom He intends to reach."

Second Collection this weekend: to help the Archdiocese of Chicago's official newspaper "The New World".
