WEEKLY MEDITATION

The building of the beliefs and values of our young people is critical to their future and the future of society. Adults ultimately influence children by their actions more than their words. It has been said that "what you do shouts so loudly, I cannot hear what you are saying". As we review some of the headlines over the past few years, it appears that what we are doing is sending a message that is in conflict with the basic values taught by Jesus. Some business leaders have been dishonest and deceitful in their dealings with their employees and investors. Some government leaders, at all levels, have abused their power in order to be self-serving rather than to serve the people who elected them. Some church leaders have abused the trust of their people by their actions and by their lack of responsible leadership. Actions really do speak louder than words! It is only in and through an intimate relationship with God that we can grow to be a person whose actions, whether on the job, in political office, within the church, or anywhere else, reflect the heart and mind of Jesus. That is what wholeness and holiness are all about!

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Bishop Gustavo Garcia sent us a letter after the Assumption Feast - Velika Gospa. (Click here to see the original!)

Labor Day
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday a year later, on September 5, 1883. In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country. Enjoy the weekend!

SOMETHING SPECIAL FOR OUR CHILDREN - This week we introduce you to a special version of our regular "Growing in Faith" newsletter. It is the supplement for children called "Partners in Faith". We know that it will be an interesting and instructional way to help them grow in their Catholic faith.

OUR PARISH BULLETIN is a publication that we give to you to take home; therefore, out of respect for the sacred place and time when we gather to worship, please do not read the bulletin during mass. Thank you!

OFFERTORY GIFTS - We would like to have 2 or 3 people bring up the gifts (bread, wine, and water) during the Offertory of the mass. Please let the ushers know before mass if you would like to carry the gifts.

CROATIAN PILGRIMAGE to the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. will take place on Saturday and Sunday, September 13 and 14. Everyone is invited to this very popular pilgrimage. This year the solemn high mass will be celebrated by Fr. Mate Bizaca from Los Angeles.  For more information call the Croatian Catholic Union: tel. 219/942-1191.

IS ALCOHOL A PROBLEM? Do you have a problem with alcohol usage? Every Thursday at 7 p.m. in our Small Hall "AA" meetings are held for anyone who is actually experiencing a drinking problem. It is good to begin a conversation with yourself about the effect of alcohol on your life. Maybe alcohol is ruining your family, your life, or your relationships. This is the opportunity to address the problem.

WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES If you are celebrating a special anniversary year (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30.....50) please let us know. A special wedding anniversary mass will be celebrated in our church on Sunday, September 21, at 9:30 a.m.

PARISH PHOTO ALBUM - This year we will undertake the project of compiling a parish family photo album. Beginning in October, a professional photographer will come to our parish to take pictures of our parishioners. A sign-up sheet to schedule photos will be available on Sunday, September 14.

CCD - FORMAL CATECHISM INSTRUCTION
Registration of children for religion classes will be held on Sunday, September 7. Please enroll your children!

ST. JEROME SCHOOL NEWS Confession for our school children will be on Tuesday, September 2, at 8:30 a.m.

VELIKA GOSPA COMMITTEE MEETING will be held on Wednesday, September 3, at 7 p.m. in the small hall. We ask that all committee members attend so that we can discuss the pros and cons of this year's feast in order to better prepare for next year's celebration.

FASHION SHOW St. Jerome School is hosting our annual Fashion Show on Wednesday, September 24, at 6 PM at the Martinique in Evergreen Park. Tickets are $30 each, and include dinner and an open bar. Please contact Pauline Dengler at 773-268-3859, Denise Bertucci at 312-842-8551 or Jan Ferro at 312-225-9751 for tickets. Bus transportation will be available.

ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT takes place each Thursday evening from 7 to 9 P.M.

SACRED HEART CROATIAN CHURCH will celebrate its 90th anniversary on Sunday, October 5.  Solemn High Mass will be at 12 noon, presided over by Bishop John Gorman. A banquet will be held at the Lexington House (7717 W. 95th St., Hickory Hills) beginning at 2 p.m. Dinner will be served at 3 p.m. Tickets are $50 for adults; $20 for children 3 - 12 years; no charge for children under 3. Tables of 8 or 10 people can be reserved. For more information call the parish office at 773/ 768-1423.
