WEEKLY
MEDITATION
This Sunday's Gospel is St. Matthew's
presentation of the temptation of the
Lord. Jesus can gain personal profit, comfort, or glory
if He
just pushes God aside for a
moment or two, or forever. Personal
profit would come if He used His
powers as the Messiah for Himself, and
turned those stones into bread.
Comfort would be His if He used His
powers to protect Himself, whether
by leaping off the temple or
calling upon the forces of God to
fight those who wanted to kill Him.
Glory would be His if he bowed to
materialism instead of to His Father.
Jesus decided that His mission was too
great to risk destroying it by doing
something for His own benefit. Jesus
chose not to sin. Because Jesus
refused to sin, we experience God's
healing hand, His love, His salvation.
Because Jesus refused to sin, we can
live eternally.
During Lent we are reminded
that we share
in the mission of Jesus Christ.
We are called to bring His salvation
to the world. We are called to make
His presence evident. We can do this.
We can let God work through us if we
choose God. We know that the choice of
doing good might lead us to a
crucifixion by the forces of the
world. We may be mocked by those who
appear to hold power in our society,
but we also know that the world needs us to give testimony to the presence of
God with our lives. As we begin Lent
we ask God to forgive us for the bad
choices we have made in the past year
and to help us to make choices that
render His presence real in the world.

OUR
90TH ANNIVERSARY. .
.RECALLING OUR PAST
In
1913,
parishioners Ivan and Mate
Bradarich donated to our church the
picture of Gospa Sinjska, which they
brought from the town of Sinj in
Croatia.
That same year on August 15,
the first AVelika Gospa@
procession was held featuring the
Gospa Sinjska picture that still
graces the side altar of our church.
The procession began at
Germania Hall and culminated at our
church.
