WEEKLY MEDITATION

SAINT BLAISE
St. Blaise was Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia. Most accounts place his martyrdom during the reign of Licinius (about 316). It can be assumed that he suffered martyrdom at the beginning of the fourth century. According to legend Blaise was a physician at Sebaste before he was raised to the episcopal see. At the time of the persecution under Licinius, he was taken prisoner at the command of the governor, Agricolaus. While in prison he saved the life of a boy who had a fishbone in his throat and was in danger of choking to death. In many places on the day of his feast the blessing of
St. Blaise is given using two blessed candles. They are either held in a crossed position by a priest over the heads of the faithful, or in front of the throat. In other places the wick of a small candle is dipped into holy oil and the throats of the faithful are touched with the wick. At the same time the following blessing is given. "May God at the intercession of St. Blaise preserve you from throat troubles and every other evil."  In some dioceses the priest adds the words "In the name of the Father..." and makes the sign of the cross over the faithful. In the Latin Church this feast falls on February 3rd.

PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS

ADULT CONFIRMATION Are you a baptized person over high school age and an active member of your parish, but have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation? On APRIL 30, Confirmation will be administered to adults at St. Bede the Venerable Church. To register or receive information call us here at our rectory: 312 842 - 1871.

Lecture Series #2: CATHOLIC UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE Did anyone ever come up to you and start rattling off verses from the Bible? Do you ever feel that they know more about the Bible than you? Do you wonder exactly how the Bible is viewed by Catholics? Well, if this sounds interesting to you, then we have an opportunity for you to get some answers. On Friday evening, February 15th, at 7 P.M. we will continue our special 90th Anniversary Lecture Series. Father Michael Yakaitis from the University of Chicago will explain how the Bible has been understood by Catholics through the centuries. Please bring your Bible and your questions. You will begin to see that you don't need to have the Bible memorized to follow the Word of God.

H.S.A. ANNOUNCEMENT Time is running out and more recipes are still needed before we can begin publication of "A Taste of St. Jerome" cookbook. Won't you please take a few moments and jot down your favorite recipe on the Recipe Collection Cards? Please return them to the school office or place them in the Recipe Card Collection Box located at the back of the church no later than February 10. Thank you! OUR 90TH ANNIVERSARY. . .RECALLING OUR PAST From the church annals: The first pastor of our parish was Fr. Josip Leon Medic. He came in 1912 to gather and organize the Croatian people. At that time there were about 5000 Croatian families in the area. At first, mass was celebrated in the Czechoslovakian church of St. John Nepomucene on 25th Street. By November 26th the Croatians had already collected $15,000.00 to purchase a protestant church and convert it according to the catholic rite. The church was consecrated on December 15, whereupon the first mass was celebrated.
