WEEKLY
MEDITATION
SAINT
BLAISE
St.
Blaise was Bishop of Sebaste in
Armenia. Most accounts place his
martyrdom during the reign of Licinius
(about 316). It can be assumed that he
suffered martyrdom at the beginning of
the fourth century. According to
legend Blaise was a physician at
Sebaste before he was raised to the
episcopal see. At the time of the
persecution under Licinius, he was
taken prisoner at the command of the
governor, Agricolaus. While in prison
he saved the life of a boy who had a
fishbone in his throat and was in
danger of choking to death. In many
places on the day of his feast the
blessing of
St. Blaise is given using two blessed
candles. They are either held in a
crossed position by a priest over the
heads of the faithful, or in front of
the throat. In other places the wick
of a small candle is dipped into holy
oil and the throats of the faithful
are touched with the wick. At the same
time the following blessing is given.
"May God at the intercession of
St. Blaise preserve you from throat
troubles and every other
evil." In some dioceses the
priest adds the words "In the
name of the Father..." and makes
the sign of the cross over the
faithful. In the Latin Church this
feast falls on February 3rd.

Lecture Series #2: CATHOLIC
UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE Did anyone
ever come up to you and start rattling
off verses from the Bible? Do you ever
feel that they know more about the
Bible than you? Do you wonder exactly
how the Bible is viewed by Catholics?
Well, if this sounds interesting to
you, then we have an opportunity for
you to get some answers. On Friday
evening, February 15th, at 7 P.M. we
will continue our special 90th
Anniversary Lecture Series. Father
Michael Yakaitis from the University
of Chicago will explain how the Bible
has been understood by Catholics
through the centuries. Please bring
your Bible and your questions. You
will begin to see that you don't need
to have the Bible memorized to follow
the Word of God.

OUR
90TH ANNIVERSARY. . .RECALLING OUR
PAST From the church
annals: The first pastor of our parish
was Fr. Josip Leon Medic. He came in
1912 to gather and organize the
Croatian people. At that time there
were about 5000 Croatian families in
the area. At first, mass was
celebrated in the Czechoslovakian
church of St. John Nepomucene on 25th
Street. By November 26th the Croatians
had already collected $15,000.00 to
purchase a protestant church and
convert it according to the catholic
rite. The church was consecrated on
December 15, whereupon the first mass
was celebrated.
