WEEKLY
MEDITATION
Today's
Gospel calls us to think about the idea
of invitation and ministry - in other
words, discipleship. Jesus saw two
fishermen and invited them to become His
followers. This Gospel account is very
short and to the point. No words are
minced or used unnecessarily, yet most
likely things were not that
uncomplicated. Jesus's simplicity and
boldness must have shocked them. He
looked at them and called them in the
middle of their daily routine, in the
midst of their labors. We can assume
that Jesus knew who they were and the
kind of men they were.
He knew that Simon Peter was headstrong
and easily angered, but just as quickly
calmed. Peter enthusiastically claimed
that he would willingly die for Jesus,
but when the decisive moment arrived,
backed down and denied that he even knew
Him. Yet despite knowing that, Jesus
called him and also invited his brother
Andrew. Jesus called them just as they
are and wanted their immediate response
to His invitation. There was no time for
hesitation. His words were the
realization of the Father's plan for
salvation, and because of that Jesus was
so insistent.

HELP
FOR SOMEONE IN NEED - A 2
year old boy named Stjepan was diagnosed
with the worst from of leukemia. He was
placed in a hospital in Zagreb. Doctors
anticipate the need for more than 2
years of hospital care to battle this
disease. He and his parents are refugees
from Sarajevo who cannot afford the
necessary care and are asking for help.
If anyone can offer monetary assistance
for this needy cause, please contact the
rectory.
REMINDER
We ask you to please conduct yourself in
the proper manner when in our church and
refrain from chewing gum, using cell
phones, and allowing children to eat or
play with toys. We need your cooperation
to keep our church clean, and create an
atmosphere of respect and reverence.
This is the temple of God, the holy
place of our sacred gatherings. Please
take care of it!
THE
CALENDAR OF PARISH EVENTS FOR 2003
can be found in today's bulletin. Please
take note of these important events in
our parish community.
ADORATION
OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT
takes place every Thursday from 7 to 9
P.M. in our church. We invite all to
come to this evening of prayer and
visitation with Our Lord.
CARDINAL
STEPINAC DAYS St. Jerome
Parish and Cardinal Stepinac Croatian
School are organizing special days to
honor Blessed Stepinac.
- On Saturday,
February 8, a concert
will be held at Healy School (3001
S. Wallace) at 5 P.M. featuring
performances by 3 Croatian folklore
groups, and followed by food,
refreshments, and dancing in St.
Jerome School Hall. ($15 adults; $5
children under 12)
- On Sunday,
February 9, the 11 A.M.
mass will be celebrated in honor of
Bl. Stepinac. Afterwards a program
and banquet will be held in our
school hall. ($20 adults; $10
children under 12 ) All are welcome!
ON SUNDAY,
MARCH 9, at 9:30 mass, our
children will receive the sacrament of
Confirmation. It is important that
parents take an active role in the
preparation of their child for this
sacrament. Requirements for
Confirmation: Each child is to choose a
name. It must be a Christian name chosen
not only for its meaning, but also
because it is the name of a saint whose
life carries some special meaning for
the student. Each child must have a
sponsor. If possible, a sponsor from
Baptism should be selected to continue
the faith process. The sponsor must be a
practicing Catholic who has already
received the sacraments of Baptism, Holy
Eucharist, Confirmation, and
Reconciliation, and is at least 16 years
old. If the sponsor is not a St. Jerome
parishioner, we must have a letter from
the sponsor's pastor by February 3. If
you have any questions please contact
your child's teacher.
