WEEKLY MEDITATION

Jesus did not want the apostles to remain dependent upon His physical presence. They would have to make their own way in the world. They had a destiny to fulfill as missionaries, spreading the faith to the world. At a certain point Christ had to cut the apron strings. As He had said to Mary Magdalene on Easter, "Do not cling to Me, but go and tell my brothers..." Now it was the apostles' turn to let go. Yet, Jesus did not abandon them. He promised to send another -a "paraclete"-a legal word implying a defender, a sort of barrister. This would be the Hol y Spirit who would come a little over a week later on Pentecost. Jesus gave ample warning of His departure, but the reality of this farewell did not sink in until He finally ascended into heaven.

TODAY, SUNDAY May 5th: FIRST HOLY COMMUNION for our second graders will be at 9:30 A.M. mass. God bless our first communicants.

Lecture on Croatian History at 6 P.M. in our small hall sponsored by the Croatian Cultural Society Napredak. The theme of this lecture is "Croatia in the 1920s and 30s".The lecturers are Dr. Ante Čuvalo and Marko Puljić.

TUESDAY: Since the apparitions began in 1981, millions of people of all faiths, from all over the world, have visited Medjugorje and have left spiritually strengthened and renewed. Countless unbelievers and those physically or mentally afflicted have been converted and healed. You owe it to yourself and your loved ones to investigate with an open mind and heart the events which are occurring in Medjugorje. Vicka Ivankovic, one of the most popular Medjugorje visionaries, will be the honored guest of our parish. Everyone is invited to pray the rosary at 6:00 P.M. attend a special mass at 7 P.M. and have the opportunity to meet Vicka afterward. This evening of prayer and spiritual enrichment is organized by the Medjugorje Prayer Group of St. Jerome Parish.

WEDNESDAY: There will be no movie series this week.
TABLE TENNIS STAR AND WORLD CHAMPION, ZORAN PRIMORAC will hold a special table tennis exhibition in our parish hall tonight from 7P.M.-9P.M. Afterwards he will meet all in attendance. Food and refreshments will be served. This exciting event is free. 

THURSDAY: MAY CROWNING Please join the school children at 7 P.M. in church as we crown Our Blessed Mother. This beautiful ceremony, which includes the "living rosary", honors Mary during her special month.

FRIDAY: Our 90th anniversary lecture series continues at 7:30 P.M. in the school hall. Fr. Mike Yakaitis will speak on Catholic Identity/ Finding Time for Prayer in a Busy Schedule. This will be the third time Fr. Mike joins us and we are looking forward to his insights. Refreshments will be served after the lecture. Please join us!

NEXT SUNDAY: MOTHER'S DAY Our Croatian school students will hold a special banquet and program in the parish hall in celebration of Mother's Day, May 12 at 12:30 P.M. Adults: $25; Children under 12 $5 Tickets are available at the rectory. Everyone is invited.

CONGRATULATIONS to Joe ("Stretch") and Eleanor Grzetich on their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Their wedding mass and reception took place at St. Jerome's Church and Hall on May 3, 1952. We wish them many more years together. May the Lord bless them and keep them.

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING has been changed from Monday, May 6th to Wednesday, May 15th at 7 P.M.

THE MONTH OF MAY, the joyous month of Our Lady, will soon be upon us. As we celebrate the 90th anniversary of our parish, we would like everyone, especially during this month, to get to know more of your fellow parishioners. Therefore, we ask each of you to do the following during May: approach someone whom you usually see in church, or see from time to time, and make the acquaintance of that person or family. Try to meet other members of our big parish family who share with you this holy meeting place.

MARRIAGE ANNIVERSARIES During our 90th anniversary year we wish to acknowledge all of the couples in our parish who are celebrating special anniversaries (5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, etc.). Please reserve Sunday, August 25 for a special mass at 9:30 A.M. where, together, all special anniversary couples will renew their marriage vows.

OUR 90TH ANNIVERSARY. . .RECALLING OUR PAST
In 1933 Fr. Blaz Jerkovic introduced the envelope system for weekly monetary contributions to the parish. During the first year of this practice, 249 families made use of the new "church envelopes".
