WEEKLY
MEDITATION
Society
can never get away from the problems
posed by status and rank. It was no
different in the time of Jesus. The
old controversy about who was the
greatest surfaces among the apostles.
This time James and John are
requesting favored treatment from
Jesus.
The truth is that we serve God best by
helping one another. We must not lose
sight of the importance of service and
availability to others, especially
those in need. When Christ warned his
disciples not to set up worldly power-structures
within the Christian community, he was
very much aware of our human failings.
We are all inclined to be selfish and
to live for ourselves without showing
much concern for others. The attitude
of "What's in it for me?"
runs deep in all our hearts. The
standard of greatness in his kingdom
is the standard of the cross. That's
why we must never lose sight of the
character of service."

A
Celebration of John Paul's 25th
Anniversary as Pope
Karol
Joseph Wojtyla was born in
Wadowice, Poland on May 18, 1920, to
an administrative officer in the
Polish army and a former
schoolteacher. During the Nazi
occupation Karol clandestinely pursued
both his studies and his acting while
working as a stonecutter to support
himself and to hold the work permit he
needed to avoid deportation or
imprisonment. While convalescing from
an accident, Karol considered a
religious vocation, and by 1942 he was
studying for the priesthood. Karol
Wojtyla was ordained a priest on
November 1, 1946. In 1958 Father
Wojtyla was named auxiliary bishop of
Krakow and four years later he assumed
leadership of the diocese with the
title of vicar capitular. He was a
visible leader, often taking a public
stand against communism and government
officials .In 1967 Pope Paul VI
elevated him to the rank of Cardinal.
On October 16, 1978, at age 58, he was
elected to succeed Pope John Paul I.
He was the first Polish pope and also
the first non-Italian pope since Pope
Adrian VI in 1522. The new pope
continued his travels and in 1981
visited the United States. That same
year Pope John Paul II suffered severe
wounds when he was shot as he entered
St. Peter's Square to address a
general audience. The pope spent two
and half months hospitalized but he
fully recovered from his wounds. Two
days after Christmas in 1983, Pope
John Paul went to the prison and met
with his would-be assassin. Since the
start of his Pontificate on October
16, 1978, Pope John Paul II has
completed 102 pastoral visits outside
of Italy and 142 within Italy. John
Paul II has canonized more than 470
people and beatified more than
1,300. Today, October 19, the
Pope is celebrating a special mass
with the cardinals in thanksgiving to
God. At this mass he will proclaim
Mother Theresa a saint.

Beatification
of Mother Theresa
Mother
Teresa, whose original name
was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, was born on
August 27, 1910 in what is now Skopje,
Macedonia. For her work with the poor
around the world she received the 1979
Nobel Peace Prize. In 1928 she joined
a religious order and took the name
Teresa. The order immediately sent her
to India. A few years later, she began
teaching in Calcutta, and in 1948 the
Catholic Church granted her permission
to leave her convent and work among
the city's poor people. She became an
Indian citizen that same year. In
1950, she founded a religious order in
Calcutta called the Missionaries of
Charity. The order provides food for
the needy and operates hospitals,
schools, orphanages, youth centers,
and shelters for lepers and the dying
poor. It now has branches in 50 Indian
cities and 30 other countries. In
addition to the 1979 Nobel Peace
Prize, Mother Teresa has received
other awards for her work with the
needy. These awards include the 1971
Pope John XXIII Peace Prize and
India's Jawaharlal Nehru Award for
International Understanding in 1972.
Mother Teresa died on September 5,
1997. She is sorely missed. Today,
Sunday, October 19, 2003, Pope John
Paul II will canonize Mother Theresa.

INSTRUCTIONS
FOR CELEBRATING THE SACRAMENTS
- Dear
Parishioners, Catholics of
the Archdiocese of Chicago worship
using the Roman rite and the Roman
Missal. Some slight revisions have
recently been made regarding how we
are to celebrate the sacraments. This
revision necessitates a few changes in
the way we worship together. These
changes will be explained in the next
few weeks and will come into effect on
the first Sunday of Advent, November
30, 2003. Please make it a
point to read about these changes (see
insert of Cardinal George's letter) so
that we may worship with responses and
actions that show a renewed reverence
toward our sacraments and the
celebration of holy mass. If you have
any questions or would like further
explanation, please contact us at the
rectory. Thank you!
