WEEKLY
MEDITATION
The
blind Bartimaeus is an example of what
our faith and trust in Jesus ought to
be. He has firm confidence in the
person of Jesus. When asked by Jesus
what he wants, there is no doubt about
his request. His prayer is "Lord,
that I may see." Although
Bartimaeus may have been a beggar, he
is a person of gratitude because upon
receiving his sight he immediately
follows Jesus. The fact that we have
eyes does not mean that we always see
what is important in life. There is
more to sight than merely seeing the
light of day. Eyes are of little use
if we fail to see that hand of God at
work in our lives. At times we all
experience such darkness and are
sorely in need of the light of God. In
caring for the blind Bartimaeus,
Christ is telling us that there is an
even worse state of blindness than
physical blindness. We all suffer from
spiritual blindness and Jesus is
letting us know that he can cure this
illness and prevent us from groping
around in darkness. The cry of the
blind man, "Lord, that I may
see," is a prayer that should
constantly be on our lips.

" The time for speeches is over.
Now we must listen to the silence of
the Pope. He speaks to us fully in
those silences, eloquent
silences."

Styczen, friend of the Pope.
