WEEKLY
MEDITATION
The
Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy
Cross, which we celebrate
today, began in the city of Jerusalem.
According to tradition, the Empress
Helen, mother of the Emperor
Constantine, found the Holy Cross in
Jerusalem in the fourth century. Three
hundred years afterwards, the Persians
sacked Jerusalem. They destroyed
churches and basilicas and stole
relics that were in the churches,
including the sacred relic of the Holy
Cross. Some years later, Emperor
Heraclius recaptured it. According to
an ancient tradition, after the Holy
Cross was recovered it was returned to
Jerusalem. The Emperor, in his richest
clothing, tried to carry it in
procession from Jerusalem to Mount
Calvary. The tradition says that when
he tried to lift the Cross, it was too
heavy and he could not carry it.
Seeing this, the bishop of Jerusalem
told the Emperor that the only way to
carry the Cross was to do it as Christ
had done it. He made the Emperor see
that the clothing he wore was not
appropriate. So the Emperor changed
into the simple clothing of a pilgrim
and took off his shoes. It was only
then that he was able to carry the
Holy Cross to the top of Mount
Calvary. We, just like the Emperor,
have to carry the cross that Christ
gives us to carry. Without the cross
we become "watered-down"
Christians. We should remember that
Christ said, "Whoever
does not take up his cross and follow
me, is not worthy of me."
(Mt 10:38) If we are to take up that
cross, we must first get rid of all
those things that weigh us down.

PARISH
PHOTO ALBUM Today we launch
our parish family album project.
Beginning the first week in October, a
professional photographer from Busson
Protrait Directories will be here to
photograph the families of our parish.
This will be a bound book that will
tell the story of our church in word
and picture, and contain color
portraits of all of our families along
with a membership roster. Each family
that is photographed and selects a
pose will receive, absolutely free, an
8x10 portrait of the directory pose
and a Parish Family Album featuring
all participating families. There is
no obligation to purchase portraits.
If you choose to order portraits, you
will receive top quality work at
competitive prices without any kind of
sitting charge. For your convenience
you will be able to view your
portraits through our Video Proofing
System within minutes of having them
taken.
Please sign up for an appointment to
be photographed with your family here
at St. Jerome's. Today, and for the
next 2 Sundays, a sign-up schedule
will be available after each mass.
Please support this opportunity that
is sure to be a memorable page in our
parish's cherished history. Our parish
family album won't be complete without
you!

THOUGHT
OF THE WEEK

is better to deserve honors and not
