He Prayed for Us....

The teachings of Jesus Christ were passed on by those who kept their eyes on the prize, eternal life, and by those who knew that here on earth we are learning to love as perfectly as Jesus did. If we listen to the words of Acts, Revelation, and John today, we need to renew in ourselves the actions that show to the world our beliefs. God prayed for us before He died and He told us we would rise again with Him. Is His teaching the focus of our days? Do we talk to our broker more than we talk to God? Is it obvious to those with whom we work that we live as God taught? Do we hide what we believe? Do we say, " I'm Catholic", but stand for nothing Catholic? Do we understand that our culture has lost its focus as it careens along, aborting and executing? Do we stand solidly on the side of providing health care for all? Do we aid the "lepers" of our society when they call out for help? Is it possible for us to be called religiously idealistic, or would that embarrass us? All of us need to look at our lives today. Our Lord and Savior prayed that we would love one another as the persons of the Trinity loved one another. Is our behavior such that our neighbors would look at us and say, "See how those Christians love one another?" If not, why not? That's the challenge today.

50th Anniversary of Priesthood

Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 A.M. Reception and lunch will follow in the parish hall. If you plan to attend, please contact the Sacred Heart rectory by May 27th ( 773/ 768-1423) Thank you.

For Sr. Mary John Goles

On Wednesday, May 30th, following our Honors Day Mass and Awards, the school children will hold a reception to thank Sr. Mary John for all she has done for St. Jerome School these many years. All parents, parishioners, and friends are welcome to attend. The reception will begin at 9:00 A.M.. Hope to see you there.

Eucharist - the Source of our Strength

The second Vatican Council taught that the Eucharistic Sacrifice is the fount and the apex of the whole Christian life (Lumen Gentium 11). When we come together on the Lord’s Day, we draw our strength from Him for the rest of the week. Some people are so eager to bring the Lord out into the world that they leave right after receiving him in Communion. Perhaps they are worried about many things, but only one thing is necessary: to bask in the presence of God in whom we have just been immersed. "The faithful are to be recommended not to omit to make a proper thanksgiving after communion. They may do this during the celebration with a period of silence, with a hymn, psalm, or other song of praise, or also after the celebration, if possible by staying behind to pray for a suitable time" (Inaestimabile donum 17). Noticeably absent from the list are reading the bulletin and checking the parking. Our time after Communion is a precious and valuable time of prayer that we need to enter into with all our hearts. Otherwise, confusion and anxiety creep into hearts that are not guided by the Lord. After mass has ended, then we can go in peace.

Volunteers Are Needed for a one-and-a-half hour per week commitment as tutors of adults who wish to learn to speak, read, and write English. One-on-one instruction is all done in English. As a literary tutor you will receive the wonderful satisfaction of helping others, making new friends, and helping someone else learn our culture, language, and customs. For more information call Sr. Joan or Sr. Kathy at the Aquinas Literary Center, 3525 South Hermitage, (773) 927-0512.
